Speeches Letters of Abraham Lincoln 18321865 Abraham Lincoln 9781545313817 Books Reviews

"Speeches and Letters of Abraham Lincoln" provides a great spectrum of his words throughout his public career from the 1830s to his death in 1865. This volume is tastefully edited. Reading Lincoln in his own words only elevates his person; there is such a clear, prescient nature to his intelligence and vision for the country that is evident two decades before his serious run for president. Over the years leading to his candidacy and ultimately his election to president this vision became a steely resolve that would act as a connection to his North star and ground his work as commander-in-chief.
I was pleased with the edition and didn't see any major format issues or editing errors that affected normal reading. If you are looking for an easy to read introduction to Abraham Lincoln in his own words this is a great place to start. If you are looking for a more academic approach with analysis and commentary you'll need to keep looking.
Have you seen those T-shirts supposedly quoting Abraham Lincoln? Read this and know what he actually said about any topic he spoke publicly on or what he included in his letters of correspondence. Quote him yourself, and see how his thoughts on slavery became more outspoken over time. This is listed in a chronological order so you can see how his thoughts and words formed over time into more concise and fully formed ideation.
An excellent opportunity to read the writings of an excellent human being! One would never know Abraham Lincoln came from such humble and scarcely educated beginnings by reading his thoughts and speeches. There's a thoughtfulness to his writing that can only be felt by reading it for yourself. Historical books can tell us much about the man but not near enough about his heart and soul.
Page after page after page after page of introduction! After being bored thru fully 10% of the book with people introducing Lincoln to us, and some boring photos, some of his statue, there may have been some actual writings of Lincoln, but I couldn't hang in there thru the fluff! This doesn't even qualify for my usual 2 stars for writing a book!!!
I have read scores of biographies on Lincoln and in almost every case the author seems wrapped up in her/his opinion and interpretation of Lincoln. In fact, Lincoln needs no explanation from a third party his own words carry more meaning than any author could add. This book is just Lincoln arranged in chronicle order without a word from anyone else. I love it. In particular his personal letters are masterful, e.g., to his freeloading brother-in-law. More than in his public speeches, his private letters reveal the quality of character that made Lincoln our most beloved President.
This is a terrific book to enjoy over breakfast, a few chapters at a time. The author has a wonderful literary voice and each of the short anecdotes about the amazing man Lincoln is thoroughly entertaining and collectively the hundreds of situations recorded give some insight into what kind of person Lincoln was. His sense of humour, contrasted with his adherence to the principles of justice, suggest that his great reputation was well deserved. Not just for Americans. Ricardo Silverburn, children's author.
This collection, critically read, can give you an insight into the man Lincoln. Note the context of situations. Where he must be a politician and work to be heard or effective, versus where he can express his true opinions. See the conflict between his great sense of duty to country and Constitution and his personal sense of what is truly write. Leave behind hero worship and see that a man, truly dedicated against slavery would, in modern context, be considered so far behind, and remember the historical context so you can see how much we should all examine what we so readily accept in our modern attitudes.
